Succeeding In The Stock Market

If you asked most people if they are living the life they envisioned themselves living, or if they are working the job they would consider to be their dream job, most of them would tell you “no”; in fact, most people go through life feeling as though they are mostly doing nothing more than wasting time, and even though they are able to make a decent living at the job where they work, “making a decent living” is not really good enough to make them feel as though it is worth all the time they spend with it.

For this reason, there are a great many people who turn to the stock market as a means to make money from home, on their own; of course, there are some people who make money in the stock market a little bit at a time, so that, in the long run, they will have a pile of wealth that they have built up and can enjoy in their retirement, while there are others who actually make enough money in the stock market in the short term to be able to live off this money – and then, for each person who falls into one of these categories, it seems as though there are even more people who actually lose money in the stock market in the long run.

Naturally, many people ultimately avoid the stock market altogether as well, and this is largely attributable to the fact that there is such a great number of people who end up losing money in the stock market in the long run; of course, what these people fail to realize is that those who have succeeded in the stock market have not done so through blind luck, or through inside information, but have instead done so through having the right financial news, knowledge, and information.

Finishing the pen blank is the most tedious

Finishing the pen blank is the most tedious of the tasks. The process involves sanding and applying the finishes. There are as many finishes as there are pen-makers. Here, I list the common finishes that I use.

Sanding the BlankĀ

Depending on the smoothness of the pen after turning, I select the right sandpaper. When using softer woods, the pen blanks are quite smooth after the last skew cut and I may only use 600 grit to 3,000 grit sandpaper, very lightly to finish the pen. With harder woods and acrylics, I tend to start with courser grits but finish with the same grit sandpaper. In each case, I stop the lathe to inspect the surface of the blank before sanding and start with the proper sandpaper. After each sanding, I also stop the lathe and sand the blank along the grain. This helps remove the “lines” due to the lathe.

With some woods, I use sanding sealer prior to the last sand for a better finish.

Finishing the Blank

There are several ways of finishing the blanks, after sanding. I am continually trying new ways, particularly as some folk prefer satin (and not gloss) finishes. Some of my customers have asked for a “rough” finish! I use the lathe for all finishing processes. After sanding and before any finishing, I clean the blanks with alcohol to remove any dust and other foreign matter that will cause problems. Below are four of the common finishing techniques that I use.

  1. Apply several coast of wax (EEE-Ultra Shine) and at least two coats of friction polish (Shellawax Cream). Both products are Australian made products and give a shiny finish, or
  2. Apply multiple layers (up to 10 coats, depending on the wood) of CA glue (super glue) on the blank. Then I sand the blank with wet (water) micromesh (micromesh is a type of sandpaper) up to 12,000 grit for a high gloss finish, or
  3. Apply two or three coats of Oganic Burnishing wax. Then using sandpaper, sand the wood, leaving a nice satin finish, or
  4. Acrylic blanks are wet sanded to at least 4,000 grit, sometimes up to 12,000 with micromesh and finished with a friction polish to give a shiny finish.

I have tried other finishes, like spray on lacquer, wipe on polyutherane and beeswax. They all have a unique finish. I am sure that new products will be available from time to time.

They look great

Assembling the Pen

The blanks are finished. They look great and all that is left is the assembly of the kit. There are several components to each pen kit and the assembly order can be different.

The first part of assembly is to press the components (nib and clip part) into the brass tubes.

At first, I used a C-clamp to assemble pens, then I graduated to a bench clamp but now I use a pen assembly vice. This s a proprietary clamp designed specifically for pen making. Each method proved quicker than the previous one.

My first task is to unpack the pen kit and inspect all the components. At times, a part might be missing or poorly made. For the common pens, I buy extra bits so that I can finish the pens should there be any problems.

Almost all pen kits have assembly instructions and I have found that reading them is a good thing. Shortcuts do not usually add any value to the assembly process.

Assembling a slimline of streamline pen (these pens have two blanks)

  1. Press the nib part into the lower tube. I shape all pens in a certain way, so that I can easily see which end is the nib end. The nib end on most pens is thinner or the same size as the clip end.
  2. Press the twisting mechanism into the other end of the “nib blank”, testing the length and working of the mechanism with the refill, adjusting as necessary. Pressing the twisting mechanism too far into the brass tube requires disassembly of the pen and then re-assembly.
  3. Press the clip end into the other blank
  4. Insert the centre ring over the twisting mechanism and push the clip end on the nib blank

The slimline or streamline pen is now fully assembled.

The assembly method is different for each pen type; however, the differences usually relate to the assembly of the internals. Almost all pens have a nib and a clip! The above assembly applies to most pens that use a CROSS refill. The pens that use a Parker refill and have a clicking mechanism usually include a spring. Fountain pens and rollerball pens assemble slightly differently.

The Most Popular Pens

The choices for buying pens is huge and so choosing the right one for your situation is important. Consideration is given to colour, type of ink, point size and feel. Here we talk about the type of inks that are used in.

Ballpoint Pens (Ballpoints)

Ballpoints are one of the most common and well-known types. They were first patented in 1888 but were not commercially viable until the 1940s when the Biro brothers started manufacturing them. The ink used in ballpoints is usually oil based and dries faster than other types of ink. This means less smudging when you’re writing. Since the ink is thick, ballpoints use less ink as you write, lasting longer than other pen types. However, thicker ink is more likely to “clump”, so you have to apply more writing pressure. As a result, these aren’t the best choice for long writing. But, if you’re just looking for a simple pen for everyday use, ballpoints are an easy and reliable option and usually the lightest in weight. Our ballpoint pens have either twist or click mechanisms.

Rollerball Pens (Rollerballs)

Rollerballs were first invented in the 1960s and use a similar design as ballpoints but with usually water-based ink. Water-based ink flows faster and soaks into the paper more than ballpoint ink. The ease of flow requires less pressure and creates a smooth, comfortable writing experience. And, because the ink flows so smoothly, rollerballs are ideal for writing text with dark and fine lines. They also come in a wider range of colours because they use water-soluble dyes. If you need to write for a long period of time, use a rollerball. We offer several rollerball options.

Gel Pens

Gel pens combine characteristics from ballpoint and rollerball pens and were also invented in the 1960s but only became commercially available in the 1980s. They use water-based gel ink that has a consistency between both types of ink. This makes the ink less likely to smudge but still flows freely enough for smooth writing. As a result, gel pens offer the comfort of rollerball pens, with the performance of ballpoint pens. And, since they use pigments instead of regular dyes, gel pens are also available in a variety of colours. If you want to make a bold statement but still expect reliability, gel pens are a great choice. Many of our pens will take gel refills, however they are more expensive.

I Have Learned About Fountain Pens

Most fountain pen users and connoisseurs passion is for their unique nature and personal writing style that is achieved with these special pens. Here are a few tips to help beginners enjoy the experience.

If you like to write small letters, less than 4mm, choose a fine nib which is about 0.6mm wide.

If you like to write large letters, more than 7mm, choose a broad nib which is about 1mm wide.

If you are unsure, perhaps choosing a medium nib which is about 0.7to 0.8mm might be your best choice. The medium nib is the most common.

Extra fine nibs and broader nibs are available and not all suppliers use the same sizing, so treat the above dimensions as a guide.

Stainless steel and gold are the main materials. Stainless steel nibs are a little stiffer than gold nibs. Other materials are used in up-market items.

Most good fountain pens allow you to change the nib, and as you learn to enjoy the writing experience, you may choose another sized nib.

Choose a fountain pen that feels comfortable to hold, if possible.

Choose the ink colour that suits you – there are many colour available, the most common being, black, blue, red and green. There are many hues in between these colours.

Write with the cap posted, so that if you accidentally drop the pen, the heavier cap end will likely hit the floor first.

When placing the fountain pen on a flat surface, like a table, lay it down with the cap on so that it does not roll away.

Carry a ballpoint pen so that any friend who needs to borrow a writing instrument does not need to use your fountain pen.

If you do lend the fountain pen to a friend, hold on the cap so that it is more likely be returned!

Replace the cap after use by attaching the cap when the fountain pen is in the upright position. (To cut the risk of ink leaking)

Store the pen with the nib end slightly up for the same reason.

Are travel may cause leaks. Travel with the pen full of ink or empty, so that the air pressure has less impact on the reservoir.

When choosing to store the pen for some time, clean first and refill with new ink when reusing. The acids in the ink may affect the metal parts of the pen, although with modern pens, this is less of a problem.

Model building is assembling select papers

Model building is assembling select papers, woods, plastics, or metal pieces to build small or scaled proportions of actual houses and structures. You may also construct imaginative characters like toys and robots. Paper is a popular choice because it is affordable and easy to work. A person may pursue assembling models as a recreational and educational hobby or as a career choice.

There are many varieties of paper weights and card boards that are used for arts and crafts projects. It is your judgment call of preferences after analyzing the model you intend to build.

We may cut paper with scissors or a sharp blade. It may be attached with paste, glue, tape, staples or straight pins,, string, thread, or paper clips.

Types of papers

Experiment with unfamiliar types and weights of papers. Making everything from scratch will tap your skills and talents and gain knowledge and experience.

  • Paperboard from consumer product boxes, shipping containers
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Chipboard-pressed recycled paper not corrugated
  • Newspapers
  • Photo paper
  • Computer paper
  • Card stock
  • Foam board
  • Index cards
  • Construction paper
  • Art and crafts paper

The size of the model determines the paper weight. Miniature structures may use light to medium weight. Larger models will need polystyrene, cardboard, Styrofoam, foam boards, or other boards lined with wood or metal. Corrugated boxes are excellent for texture.

These papers are available in distinct colors, depict unique textures or have drawings suitable for interior and exterior decor.

Your choice of paper to build your model is the appearance of the final project.

  1. Prepare a stable base on which we will place the house and landscaping.
  2. Draw a template or make a blueprint
  3. Trace the template onto the finished paper choice
  4. Decorate or paint the interior and the exterior before cutting. You may draw or use colorful craft paper to mark windows and curtains, hanging pictures, and other items that appear on the walls of a house.
  5. Cut with scissors or a blade (You may cut away the entire blueprint of the template or cut individual sections.)
  6. Assemble the structure (Soft paper is assembled easier by allowing additional folding tabs that will secure the sections together.) Use adhesives to fasten the house together.
  7. Use toothpicks, ice cream sticks, paper, and other small items to construct interior furniture and exterior objects.
  8. The roof is prepared by drawing a template or making a blueprint. We can place it on top of the house as one piece or in sections depending on the configuration of the structure.
  9. Place the finished structure on the foundation to make it easier to transport your creation or to stabilize it.
  10. Use paper craft or origami techniques to shape toilet tissue and rolls, and colored tissue sheets for shrubbery, flowers, lamp posts and other outdoor items.

What Is Sealing Wax

Christmas season is nearby, and people are already busy choosing gifts and wrapping them. Many are busy planning festive season weddings and dinners. And, for that, they are busy choosing invitation cards, cards, envelopes, etc., well. Wrapping gifts and sending cards is not new, as it stands to be an old tradition even when everyone relies on digital media the most.

But then wrapping gifts and sending invitations should not be tad boring. One way to make these gifts and cards fun is by adding a personalized wax stamp on it. Yes, you may have heard of it. But, those who are new to this have no idea what is sealing wax and how to use it. This read will help them find a way to understand better.

Sealing Wax

To make wax seals with the help of a wax stamp, you should invest in high-quality sealing wax. These waxes are very much like candle wax, but more strong, shiny, and pigmented. One can easily find these sealing wax in craft stores both online and offline. The thing that makes wax seals good is its strength. These should not break easily after making seals. Also, they should melt easily into a nice liquid form.

One can find these sealing waxes in various types, depending on the way they can be melted. One can choose glue gun versions of the sealing wax. This makes it easy to melt the wax without much mess. Also, one can find wax pellets, which can be melted using a melting spoon. It can be messy but fancy.

Features of Sealing Wax

Some features to look for in sealing waxes are:

  • Colorful and highly pigmented
  • Sturdy and durable so that it does not break easily.
  • Should hold the impression perfectly.
  • Smooth in texture.
  • It should not be sticky.

Types and Formats

When it comes to sealing waxes, there are two variables that you can find in the stores.

  1. Traditional wax: these waxes are usually candle waxes and are found in stock form. They can be cut into small pieces and used for making seals. But, they are not that sturdy and thus can break while mailing the card or initiation.
  2. Flexible wax blend: this blend of wax has both wax and resin in it. Thus making it more durable and sturdy. Also, this wax type has more of a body and shiny finish that holds its shape. It also holds the impression of the stamp perfectly.

CDC Launches Attacks on Landlords

Do not worry about landlords. They are rich. They don’t need their tenants to pay rent. I get so frustrated with the closed-minded advocates who find it difficult to see how an action that might benefit one group, hurts others. They want to push their agenda, no matter the cost.

According to some housing advocates, the recent CDC Eviction Moratorium does not do enough to help, and it should be the burden of the landlord to locate government support while the tenant is able to miss rent payments with no recourse. Do these people not realize that the majority of landlords own less than three units and NEED rent to fund maintenance, taxes, insurance and mortgage payments? What happens to their property when they stop paying their mortgage?

Early last month the CDC used its’ powers to enact a moratorium stopping landlords from evicting their tenant for nonpayment of rent. This moratorium is good through the end of the year, with the possibility of extensions. The CDC can do this because they claim this is not about supporting people in need financially (which is not their job) it is to slow the spread of COVID-19 (which is their job). I applaud them for recognizing the risks of homelessness and compact living situations with the spread of the virus, but what I don’t understand is why the burden falls on the small “mom and pop” landlords? Here are the often-misunderstood details of the recent Eviction Moratorium.

With very little exception, every tenant qualifies for eviction protection!! To qualify, the tenant only needs to meet two requirements.

Attempt to get government support to pay rent.

Make less than $99,000 in a year for a single taxpayer or $198,000 for dual income families.

I struggle with the second requirement, because that is more money than most people that do make their payments earn in a year. According to the CDC, in order to afford a 2-bedroom home in the most expensive market in the country, the family needs to make $80,621 per year. That would keep rent at 30% of the household income. Since the CDC referenced the 30% of income number, their guidelines to qualify for this moratorium means that the family that is protected from eviction could make rent payments of almost $5,000 per month. See why I say almost every tenant qualifies? All my tenants certainly do.

Sound bad? It gets worse. The process to stop you from evicting them for nonpayment is rather simple. All that is required is for the tenant to send you a signed declaration. They can get this declaration online, sign it, and send it to you and stop you from evicting them. Notice how I did not mention that they need to prove they tried to get support, nor do they need to prove that they actually need it? It is important to note that this is only for nonpayment, so if you have a tenant that is breaking rules, causing trouble, or is simply outside the lease term, you can still evict. It is also good that this is not a forgiveness of rent, or at least that is the idea, it is just a hold on the eviction. The tenant will still owe all rent and late fees and you, as the landlord, will still have the opportunity to collect that at some point. Good luck with that!
